OpenWeb Hierarchical Storage Management

OpenWeb HSM (hierarchical storage management) manages archive and retrieval of files on very large hard disk arrays. OpenWeb HSM is a set of cgi programs that are built-in to the Acordex OpenWeb server, and are external to the web server for other platforms.

OpenWeb HSM manages the migration of documents to off-line storage on media such as CD and DVD. When a user needs a document, OpenWeb HSM first looks on large hard disk arrays (sized to each customer's requirements). If the document is too old to be on the array, OpenWeb HSM notifies the client software. All imaging functions include this fundamental management of off-line and on-line storage.

The major functions of OpenWeb HSM are:
  • Manage very large hard disk arrays to maximize retrieve performance for the retrieve clients.
  • Accept incoming files and archive them by file name wherever there is room for them.
  • Instantly send out files requested by client computers.
  • Keep the newest or recently used documents in the hard disk array.
  • Manage the migration of documents to off-line storage on media such as CD and DVD.
  • Request removable media (e.g. CD or DVD cartridges) when clients need old documents.
  • Files that have been writen on to two removable disks are candidates for purging.
  • Purge oldest files on-the-fly if more space is needed for new incoming files. No batch purge operation!
