Internet/intranet imaging (i3) is the use of Internet and World Wide Web standards to architect imaging solutions. Web standards TCP/IP, http, ftp and html, and imaging standards CCITT compression, TIFF and PostScript make up the core of i3.

Internet/intranet imaging will be as ubiquitous as the Internet itself. At Acordex, we're staking our future on its success. We believe that i3 will do the same thing to proprietary imaging frameworks that the Internet is doing to proprietary e-mail and groupware products - it will replace them. i3 retrieval client

You already have the most important requirement for an i3 client, a web browser. Inside your web browser, you need a plug-in or a Java applet to view TIFF documents. The advantage of a plug-in is it runs in native code for your computer and can be faster. But the user must download and install a plug-in that is compatible with his computer configuration. This task can be daunting to some users.

The advantage of a Java applet, like ViewTIFF for Java, is that it rquires no installation by the user, revision control is managed centrally at the server and it works the same way regardless of the end-user's OS or CPU brand. It will even work with the new very low cost Network Computers (NC).
